Gardline Environmental (New Zealand) Ltd successfully lead the referral process for Ifremer

Ifremer (l’Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer), the French public marine research institute, conducted a seismic survey as part of a scientific research project studying the Tectonic Event of the Cenozoic in the Tasman Area (TECTA) with Ifremer's research vessel L'Atalante. The survey programme included surveying within areas of the Tasman Sea that fall under the jurisdiction of New Caledonia, Australia and New Zealand. The project was part of a collaborative international scientific programme, including scientists from France, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Australia, the USA and Germany and it aimed to understand historical movements of tectonic plates, which will assist in creating models for predicting future tectonic activity.

Gardline Environmental (New Zealand) Ltd (GENZL) was contracted to lead the consultation and referral process as a requirement under the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act). The EPBC Act provides for the protection of the environment, especially matters of national environmental significance (NES) which includes marine mammal species. Under the EPBC Act, a person must not take an action that has, will have, or is likely to have a significant impact on any of the matters of NES without approval from the Australian Government Environment Minister or the Minister’s delegate. With the expert knowledge of GENZL’s Marine Wildlife Department team the referral process was concluded successfully and the Ministry for the Environment decided that the proposed survey is not a controlled action if undertaken in a particular manner. The measures included adherence to the EPBC Act policy Statement 2.1 - Interaction between offshore seismic exploration and whales (September 2008) to minimise any potential impacts to humpback whale (Megapthera novaeangliae).

Collaboration with a scientific institution such as Ifremer has expanded GENZL’s services outside the commercial market and show cased that its knowledge and experience on marine mammal mitigation and protection is also applicable and well suited for scientific projects.
